Andrew Johnstone
WORKSHOP LEADER
We have found a perfect crazy person to help us with this project!
Andrew Johnstone is an artist and a key player at the Burning Man. For 2005 - 2018, Andrew was honoured with the title "Design Steward of the Man" and has led the design of the Man Base, the highly stylised base on which the man stands. The Independent called him 'the visionary who helps create the most iconic moment of each year's event'. Andrew specialises in large scale art projects, murals, 3D computer designs, and geo maps. You can see his work in the image above.
DETAILS
YOUR JOURNEY
PART I. Online module, 4 weeks
  • Six 2-hour live sessions
  • 1-2 hours of independent assignments every week
  • January 26 - February 4, 2021
Topics: The philosophy of Burning Man; On conceptual art and Burning Man guidelines; Development of your creative idea; Presentation of your art project.

Each meeting includes a group discussion and feedback on your personal project.

II. PART TWO. Bringing your work to Burning Man
  • Two 1-hour live sessions
  • 1-2 independent work every week
  • February 4 - July 4, 2021
As a result of online sessions in Part I you develop a concept for your art project. During Part II you work on your own. You will have 4 months to create the art piece at home and ship it to Academy's address in California USA. We will then bring it to Burning Man in Nevada. During this period you will have 2 catch-up sessions with the course leader Andrew Johnstone.

III. PART THREE. The Burn.
We install your pieces at the central place of the event - the Temple. At the end of the week The Man burns. The Temple burns. Your art piece will disappear too. We document it with photos and videos and make a catalogue.
WHAT KIND OF ART PROJECT WILL I WORK ON?
You are required to produce an art piece with the following dimensions:
Height - 12 cm
Width - 25 cm
Weight - up to 1 kg
Material - any
YOUR CONTRIBUTION
Your contribution is 1650 euro. You can pay once or in 6 instalments of EUR 275. Additional cost include materials for your art work (depends on you, usually around 60 euro) and shipping costs to California (30-40 euro).

NOTE: this is NOT our usual course. We do this project as a collective art workshop. We are transparent about the costs and processes.
WHO CAN JOIN
Come yourself, invite people that you know and like. We will do the same.
RESULTS OF COLLECTIVE WORKSHOP 2020
Two art collectives created these pieces from scratch. Burning Man was postponed in 2020. But we found an alternative - the pieces are showed in a public sculpture garden in Venice!
FAQ
Do I have to be a professional artist to join?
No, it is radical acceptance. Usually our workshops have both established and emerging artists and curious minds.
Do I have to go to the Burning Man to participate? What if I cannot?
No, you do not have to. ECA team will take the piece, do the setup and documentation. You will work on the piece together with us (and get all the credentials).
What if Burning Man is cancelled in 2021?
We are rather optimistic about the event in 2021. However, we have exhibiting options in case Burning Man is postponed again. We will show the work at the virtual event organized by the Burning man team or at Giardini della Marinaressa in Venice, right in front of the Venice Biennale entrance.
I am not sure I can join live. What is time commitment?
On-the-go format allows you to connect at your convenience. Live sessions are recorded. You get a life-time access to all the recordings.
    Is it for me?
The workshop is for anyone who has ideas and an artistic vision but does not have time or the possibility to craft them into great projects. The aim is to refine your artistic vision, make art work that resonates with others and give you possibility to share it with the others (in this case - the Burning Man visitors + Internet)
I am not sure I can afford it, what can you do for me?
Sincerely, we are not sure we can afford it either :) We have the commitment, expertise and desire to make it happen. We have two art projects already made and on their way to the Playa.

So we feel you but as it is not our usual course but a collective art project, there is little we can do. Contact us anyway, we are always open to discuss and see what can be done.
