About the course

The course is specially created for fearless designers who want to understand the trends, learn practical skills and get inspired. It focuses on understanding the role of design and its enduring relevance. The program is a balanced combination of theory and practice. Morning classes take place in historic Venetian palazzos. You spend afternoons visiting galleries, architecture and design studios and the Venice Biennale, the most prestigious event in Art and Architecture industries.

10.00 - 10.30 Welcome breakfast in a historic Venetian palazzo. 10.30 - 11.30 Meeting with curators of the Venice Design Exhibition. Guided tour. 12.00 - 13.00 Italian lunch at Cafe Koffler. 13.00 - 15.30 Design: the world around us. The significance of design at all scales, and what it means for daily life. 16.00 - 17.00 Visit to the panoramic terrace of Fondaco dei Tedeschi. 17.00 - 18.00 Prosecco and spritz in a local bar (optional).
10.00 - 12.00 Lecture: Copies in design. 12.00 - 13.00 Lunch time. 13.30 - 14.30 Meet the designer: visit to a local design studio. 15.30 - 16.30 Visit to Olivetti Showroom on St. Mark Square, an iconic space created by Carlo Scarpa.
10.00 - 12.00 Lecture: The art of glass in Venice 12.00 - 13.00 Lunch time 13.00 - 16.00 Trip to Abate Zanetti School of Glass, Murano Island (closed in August, visit to another glass studio on Murano island).
10.00 - 12.00 Trends in Design. How to foresee them, how to work with them. 12.00 - 13.00 Lunch time. 13.00 - 15.00 Understanding color: advanced color theory, myths and truths about the perception of colors. 15.30 - 17.00 Optional visit to a museum of choice.
10.00 - 12.00 Lecture: Italian design. What does Made in Italy stand for? 12.00 - 13.00 Lunch time. 13.00 - 14.30 Reflection session and discussion of personal projects. 14.30 - 15.00 Certificate ceremony and prosecco. 15.15 - 16.15 Boat tour around Venice.
Optional visit to the Biennale or pre-selected collateral events.
You will meet international experts from all over the world. Here are some of the Design week lecturers.
Francesca Valan is an Industrial Designer who is specialized in the use of colour. She studied Industrial Design at the European Institute of Design (IED) in Milan. She is a founding member of Gruppo del Colore, an Italian organisation which promotes the culture of colour.
Director of the European Cultural Centre. Lucia has years of experience in large-scale international exhibitions. Previously, she worked as international press officer for several national pavilions at the Venice Biennale and held various positions in Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice.
